The Copa del Rey semifinals have arrived, and this Wednesday, San Sebastián will be the stage for a high-stakes showdown between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid. A clash of titans in which Los Blancos will be looking for redemption after their last Copa del Rey meeting against the txuri-urdines. The last time they faced off in the competition was during the 2019/2020 season, in a one-off quarterfinal. On that occasion, Real Sociedad stunned Madrid at the Bernabéu and went on to win the title.

To reach these semifinals, Real Madrid had to fight until the very last second at Butarque. As they have done so many times in European nights, Ancelotti’s team pulled off another epic comeback, much like in the Champions League against Manchester City. With the score tied at 2-2, Vinícius Junior pushed tirelessly for the winning goal, but it wasn’t until the final moments that academy player Gonzalo emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal to send Madrid through to the next round.

Real Madrid’s journey in the Copa del Rey has been anything but easy, with each round presenting a new challenge. Los Blancos eliminated Deportiva Minera (0-5) in the round of 32, Celta de Vigo (5-2) in the round of 16 at the Bernabéu—a match that went into extra time and was surrounded by controversy—and Leganés (2-3) in the quarterfinals, securing another dramatic comeback. Now, the biggest challenge yet awaits, with a spot in the final on the line.

Real Sociedad’s Road to the Semifinals

Real Sociedad also secured their place in the semifinals after a convincing 2-0 win over Osasuna. La Real delivered one of their best performances, taking control of the game with goals from Barrene and Brais in the first half. Their intensity, precision, and attacking efficiency proved to be the key to their victory and progression in the tournament.

Both teams also played their La Liga matches on Sunday. Real Madrid was the first to take the field, securing a crucial win over Girona to stay in the title race. Luka Modrić opened the scoring just before halftime, and Vinícius Jr. sealed the victory in the final minutes, keeping Madrid level with Barcelona at the top of the standings.

Meanwhile, Real Sociedad played at home against Leganés, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory. While not a spectacular performance, their efficiency in attack and defensive solidity ensured a key win that keeps them in contention for a European spot in La Liga.
