The King of Europe with Ancelotti at the helm will not miss his appointment with the quarter-finals. Real Madrid agonizingly made it through to the next round in the Champions League. The Whites had to go to extra time and penalties to eliminate Atlético de Madrid. After the first leg, in which the balance tipped in Real Madrid’s favor (2-1), the Metropolitano dictated the outcome from eleven meters out. Gallagher’s goal forced extra time and then penalties, with the Whites emerging victorious.
In this new Champions League format, both Real Madrid and Atlético knew in advance who their opponents in the next round would be and even which matches they would play at home and away. The draw not only revealed the possible cross-overs in the round of sixteen, quarter-finals and semi-finals, but also which teams would play at home in the second leg.
Who will Real Madrid play in the Champions League quarter-finals?
Real Madrid will face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter finals. The Gunners won the first leg of their previous tie against PSV (1-7), so a draw in the return leg was enough to take them through to the next round. Arsenal drew 2-2 and are now through to the quarter finals on aggregate (9-3).
This will be the second time that Real Madrid and Arsenal have met in the Champions League. The first time was in 2006 in the round of sixteen. The English side stormed the Bernabéu in the first leg with a superb performance from Henry, while in the second leg they drew 0-0 and the Whites were eliminated.
