Government-Driven SSA Updates Could Impact Every Retiree — Here’s What’s Changing

Ronald Araújo’s departure is taking shape: a new suitor emerges

The next Social Security payment is days away as millions of retirees are set to receive their checks on March 19, 2025. However, only beneficiaries born between the 11th and the 20th will receive payments on this day. Others, born between the 1st and 10th and between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive payments on the other Wednesdays of the month.

Due to the new changes under the Social Security Fairness Act, and other enforcement policies regarding overpayments, it is crucial to stay informed about how and when you will receive your social security check.

Social Security Payments Schedule

Here is a table showing when payments are done depending on the birthdate of a beneficiary. Those whose birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month should have received their benefits on March 12, which was last week Wednesday.

Those born between the 11th and the 20th of any month will receive their payments on Wednesday the 19th, which is next week. Those whose birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any month will receive payments on March 26th, which is the last Wednesday of March.

Birth Date Range March Payment Date
1st – 10th March 12
11th – 20th March 19
21st – 31st March 26

Expected Amounts of Social Security Check

Due to the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase of 2.5%, the average amount of Social Security benefits is set to rise to $1920.20 per month. According to the SSA reports, the average monthly payment in 2025 is around $2,000. However, these amounts will differ depending on an individual’s earnings, when they claimed benefits and other deductions.

Major Changes in Social Security that Retirees Need to Know

Following the signing into law of the Social Security Fairness Act on January 5, 2025, two controversial provisions have been eliminated. These provisions are the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The WEP reduced Social Security for retirees who had pensions from jobs that did not pay into Social Security such as police officers, teachers, and firefighters.

The GPO reduced spousal and survival benefits for individuals who received government pensions. The elimination of these two provisions will see over 3.2 million retirees receive higher Social Security payments starting April 2025. Additionally, retirees will receive one-time retroactive payments for benefits that have been lost since January 2024. The SSA started processing retroactive payments on February 25, 2025 and will continue through March. Due to these amendments, some retirees could receive an increase of over $1,000 per month.

The Resumption of 100% Withholding for Overpaid Benefits

Besides the removal of provisions that are set to increase the amounts of benefits retirees will receive from April 2025, SSA has reinstated a policy that aims at recovering over &7 billion that was lost in overpayments. This policy will affect retirees who have received overpayments and they could see 100% of their benefits withheld until their debts are cleared.

However, SSI recovery will remain capped at 10% until March 27, 2025, when the policy is set to take effect. Critics against this policy argue that withholding 100% of retirees’ benefits could cause financial stress on seniors who fully depend on their Social Security benefits to cover their daily expenses.

Conclusion

The next round of Social Security benefits is expected to be on 19th March 2025, which is only 3 days away. Retirees who fail to receive their checks on this day are advised to wait for three days before contacting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local SSA office.

Considering the major transformations at SSA, beneficiaries are advised to stay tuned for further developments by signing up for a “My Social Security Account” at SSA.gov.
