Since Hansi Flick put Szczesny in goal, the Polish goalkeeper’s performance seems to have no limit and his performances, such as the one in the Champions League with 7 key saves, are taking Barça this season into a 2025 to frame with the team unbeaten.
Since the preliminary league match against Benfica (4-5), the Polish goalkeeper has earned the right to be “number one”, as Hansi Flick is keen to remind us at every press conference. Since that day, Szczesny’s performance has been outstanding, leaving Flick in no doubt about choosing him in all competitions.
The goalkeeper has now played sixteen matches between the sticks, with a balance of eight clean sheets: Barbastro (0-4), Athletic (0-2), Alavés (1-0), Valencia (0-5), Rayo Vallecano (1-0), Las Palmas (0-2) and Real Sociedad (4-0). The last one was last Wednesday’s Champions League match against Benfica. Barça have not lost with him: 14 victories and a couple of draws.
The goalkeeper was asked about his future, a secondary issue for him now. “Will I sign a new contract in the summer? I’m not worried about that now,” said Tek. “My focus is on the games, I want to give my best for Barcelona and then we’ll see about my future, at the right time,” explained the Pole, who is increasingly happy and integrated into Barça.
Although the goalkeeper does not want to talk about his future, his agent, Joshua Barnett, is sure of his continuity. “Tek is delighted in Barcelona and Barça are very happy with Tek, so we will easily come to an agreement. When the time comes, we will understand each other quickly and there will be no problem in renewing his contract,” he explained to ‘Jijantes’.
Barnett insists that the goalkeeper is now focused on the rest of the season and on winning all the titles at stake, but he is clear that there will be no problem in keeping the Polish goalkeeper at Barça: “We are at the most important moment of the season and perhaps it is not the right time to talk about it, but I insist that once we get down to work on it there will be no problems and we will come to an agreement very easily”.
