Oscar Piastri surprised everyone with a brilliant pole position for the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, making it clear that McLaren is head and shoulders above the rest of the teams and that, once again, they are going to be fighting for victory. The surprise, however, is that Norris will not even be in the front row this time. George Russell will start in second position after a spectacular lap, which left him just thousandths of a second behind the Briton. Lando Norris completes the top three, however, and they will be fighting for another 1-2 for the papayas.
Max Verstappen, the current world champion, will start fourth, very close to the times set by the leaders, and followed by Lewis Hamilton, who will try to move up from fifth place. Ferrari did not have a good qualifying, contrary to what was seen in the Sprint sessions. The Maranello team’s car number two will start in sixth place: Charles Leclerc.
The big surprise was Isack Hadjarr with Racing Bulls, who achieved a brilliant seventh position, while Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, Yuki Tsunoda also from RB, and Williams‘ Alexander Albon complete the top 10 on the grid.
The Spanish drivers suffered in this qualifying. Fernando Alonso, with Aston Martin, could only manage thirteenth, showing difficulties in finding the necessary balance and rhythm throughout the session. Carlos Sainz, with similar problems in his Williams, will start even further back, from fifteenth position, facing a difficult race to score points.
This is the official grid for the 2025 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix:
