Aston Martin wants to turn around its performance in the next races after a complicated start to the World Championship. Although the AMR25 has been a more competitive car than its predecessor, the positions achieved so far have not been up to the standards of the team and its drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. The British team, however, has a plan of well-defined updates that could change their luck in the next races of the championship.
Aston Martin and their improvements
In the words of Pedro de la Rosa, team advisor, Aston Martin does not expect to bring major improvements for the next races, at least for the Italian GP, which will be held on May 18th in Imola. That said, the Japanese, Bahraini, Saudi Arabian and Miami GPs will not see significant improvements to the car.
Despite the claims of Alonso, who has stated that “we will try to bring something to each grand prix”, the reality is that the team is focused on carrying out a major package of improvements to be incorporated in Europe. It is a strategy to make the maximum effect of the changes in a single moment in the championship.
The keys to Aston Martin’s improvements in the AMR25
The package of improvements that Aston Martin plans to implement in Imola could lead to a change in the trend. These improvements are expected to focus on significant aerodynamic development, further development of the efficiency of the car’s floor and optimal cooling and management of the tyres.
One of the particularly relevant points is the new technology that the Aston Martin team has. Now the Silverstone team can develop and test their improvements more carefully thanks to their own brand new wind tunnel. In addition to this, star engineer Adrian Newey, even though he is working on next season’s car, is still supervising the progress of the current AMR25, which could mark a milestone in the car’s development.
As Fernando Alonso himself points out, such is the equality on the grid that “the good thing is that the team that brings two or three tenths of an improvement is not going to win two or three places. It will win eight”. This statement makes clear the optimism that the Spaniard has about how the evolution of the AMR25 could impact the general classification of the event as it progresses over time.
The competition will also bring improvements
Aston Martin will not be the only team to present new developments in Imola. Traditionally, the first race on European soil is the most typical for a large number of the world championship teams to present their first major package of new developments. Therefore, the key is to see who gets it right with their development and respectively advances in the championship.
It is worth remembering that, throughout 2024, Aston Martin was generating numerous improvements that, in some cases, were not what they had expected and even went so far as to impair the functioning of the car. This issue has led the team to take a cooler and more analytical approach this year to try to ensure that the improvements really do translate into increased performance in the car.
Looking ahead to Imola, the British team is confident that this new package of improvements will give them the boost they need to establish themselves at the top of the midfield and, who knows, get closer to the leading teams. As the competition progresses, it remains to be seen whether this strategy really works and whether the AMR25 can fight to get close to the best teams on the grid.
