Aston Martin is already working on the next improvements to the car and they hope that these will enable the AMR25 to take a step forward in the drivers’ standings. With Adrian Newey supervising the new package, Fernando Alonso hopes to have a more competitive car than the one shown so far.
The most evenly matched World Championship in years
We are in the last season of the current Formula 1 regulations, and the teams have squeezed almost the maximum performance that the single-seaters can offer, which shows great equality on the Formula 1 grid. But there is still room for improvement, and Aston Martin and Alonso are aiming for that.
The team that manages to incorporate improvements to the car and manages to gain a few tenths of a second could take a significant step forward in the fight to continue climbing positions. The teams are aware of this and are working hard in their factories to find those times that will give them an advantage. But only one team has the best engineer in the history of the sport, and that is Aston Martin, which is working under the supervision of Adrian Newey.
Improvements from Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso has been the first to express optimism about these possible improvements and the impact they may have on the classification. He admits that the car has improved since last year, but the new package, expected in May, could be decisive.
“We have improved. And we have to see what developments are coming. The good thing is that the team that brings two or three tenths of an improvement is not going to gain two or three places. They will gain eight. We hope to continue improving at each Grand Prix”.
There is no doubt that these words are a declaration of intent from the Spaniard and a way of putting pressure on Aston Martin, which has the necessary tools to make the improvements that the AMR25 needs.
The role of Adrian Newey
In this sense, the arrival of Adrian Newey at the team could be decisive for the future of the team. It is true that the engineer has been hired to focus mainly on next year’s car under the new regulations, but Alonso admits that Newey has one eye on this season’s car. “He is very motivated, looking to 2026, but also with one eye on what we do every weekend”.
The Spaniard is confident that his knowledge will allow them to increase their options starting this season. “I’m really looking forward to working with him. I know his approach is unique and that his ability to find innovative solutions can make all the difference.”
Adrian Newey is not the only new addition to Aston Martin: the new factory and the new wind tunnel are key to the evolution of the AMR25, and the team, knowing about the addition of the engineer, saved tunnel hours to be able to apply them with his arrival and also save themselves having to travel to the Mercedes facilities to carry out the tests. In this way, it is to be expected that Aston Martin can finally have an optimal work dynamic that will allow them to get the maximum potential out of their cars for the next races.
Although the new parts are not expected until the Imola GP on May 18th, Newey is expected to identify problems in the car’s configuration for the next grands prix and allow for the optimization of what is currently available.
The future of Aston Martin depends on the next improvements, and if they are confirmed to work, they could improve Fernando Alonso’s chances this season. After last season’s “improvements” made the AMR24 worse, it is hoped that this year, with Newey’s help, they will make the car better in the midfield and enable it to fight with the frontrunners in some Grands Prix.
