In the run-up to the match against Girona, one of the big news stories was the comeback of Christensen, who has now recovered from his injury and faces a few key months for the resolution of his future, which, in principle, seems far from Barça.
The Danish international’s contract ends in June 2026, but the club’s intention is to get rid of him this summer, so the coaching staff believe it would be important for him to get back on the pitch and confirm that he is one hundred percent and still has a long career at the highest level ahead of him.
The Danish center back got off to a bad start to the season, playing only the first matchday against Valencia. He then dropped out during the week of training. His recovery was a long one and when he was finally back with the group, the Barça player suffered another setback, again during training. Christensen injured the soleus muscle in his right leg in training prior to the Champions League match against Atalanta on January 28th. He was then expected to be out for approximately three weeks.
His new injury was one of the reasons that put the brakes on several options the player had to leave in the winter market. And the fact is that Christensen had interest from Saudi Arabia, as well as from some European clubs to leave in the winter market, but his physical problems put a stop to the operation. A few weeks ago, at the beginning of March, he relapsed and it is clear that this season he will not enjoy any playing time, which could also complicate his departure in the summer.
Christensen knows that his future is at stake in two months’ time and Barça is considering what to do, prioritizing a sale as long as the player can prove himself and increase his value on the market. In these two months, Barça is playing for the treble and it is not clear that Hansi Flick can give him the showcase minutes he needs to complete the sale.
In Barça’s immediate future there are vital matches such as the return leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals at the Metropolitano against Atlético de Madrid where a place in the final will be at stake; as well as the two quarter-final duels against a tough Borussia Dortmund, where the Azulgrana team will be playing to stay alive in the Champions League. All this while the fight with Real Madrid for the league title is in full swing.
