Eduardo Camavinga was once again one of the negative protagonists in the second leg of the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. The French footballer was moved to the left wing, and although he played well for 45 minutes, everything went wrong in the second half.
Camavinga’s inconsistency
The France international is having a somewhat irregular season, but the bad performances outnumber the great matches. He had just played some good games, including the minutes he had in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Atlético Madrid, where we saw his best.
However, his season has had more blots than usual, with big mistakes in key matches, such as the Copa del Rey tie against Celta, where a blunder in the final stretch of the game led to extra time, the penalty he conceded on Gavi in the Supercopa final that started Barcelona‘s comeback, or the penalty he gave to Osasuna for a mistimed tackle in the box that led to the final equalizer.
His lack of regularity, exacerbated by the injuries he has accumulated throughout the season, has not only slowed down the progress he had been making since his arrival, it has been a step backwards that has exhausted the patience of many at the Bernabéu.
Bad game against Real Sociedad
It must be said that in the first 45 minutes Camavinga was quite successful in his interventions, especially when it came to marking Take Kubo. He stuck to the Japanese player at all times, preventing him from turning and developing his game, which was key to Real Sociedad’s attack. However, in the second half everything changed.
Perhaps because he ran out of energy very quickly, perhaps because of a confidence he shouldn’t have, he has already had other games to learn his lesson, or simply because Kubo was very inspired in the second half. During the second half, the Japanese player was everywhere, there was no way to stop him. In the move that made it 1-2, first it was the Japanese player who went down the wing, the move ended in a clearance and he was back on his side, this time it was Marín, who only had to feint to dribble past a Camavinga who was totally accelerated and out of control, he won the baseline and scored an own goal by Alaba.
The 1-3 also came from his wing, he came out to steal the ball instead of holding his ground and Kubo got past him with a simple one-two that he played to Luka Modric, leaving the former Madrid player to get in on the left side of the white defense to pass the ball back for Oyarzabal, again with Alaba’s help, to score the third.
And with the game tied at three, when it seemed that Real Madrid had saved the day, he again lost his marker to Kubo and went to stop him from entering the area. The foul resulted in the fourth goal that took the game to the final whistle.
An uncertain future
Camavinga’s future is up in the air right now. His performances continue to be irregular and from Valdebebas they would look favorably on transferring the player if a good offer arrives. They are aware of the quality of the player, that he still has a long way to go, but they know that you can’t support a player if you don’t know what he is going to offer you in each game. His future is at stake in these two months of competition, we’ll see if he is able to convince or not.
