The future of Carlos Sainz continues to generate uncertainty, even though he has just arrived at Williams. McLaren has not ruled out bringing the Spanish driver back in a move that could shake up the Formula 1 transfer market. Recent statements by Zak Brown, CEO of the British team, have reignited speculation and point to an open door for a dream return.
McLaren leaves the door open for Carlos Sainz
Zak Brown does not mince his words when making statements, and he has referred to the possibility of seeing Carlos Sainz back in McLaren colors. “The door is always open for Carlos, as long as we have a seat available,” said the American executive. Although both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri currently have long-term contracts, Zak Brown made it clear that, in the event of unexpected changes, Carlos Sainz’s return is not out of the question: “If for some reason something changes and Carlos is available, I have his phone number.”
These words have not gone unnoticed in the paddock, especially since Carlos Sainz left a very positive impression at McLaren during his time there between 2019 and 2020. His departure to join Ferrari was seen at the time as a natural step, but relations between the driver and the British team have always remained on good terms.
Carlos Sainz and his open future
While McLaren is publicly leaving open the idea of bringing Carlos Sainz back, the Madrid-born driver is continuing to settle in at Williams, where he seems to be finally finding his best form. But before signing for the team, there was speculation that he would race for Sauber (Audi next year), Mercedes, Red Bull and even Alpine.
Carlos Sainz signed a two-year contract with Williams, with options to extend. Alongside Alex Albon, he is a key player in the ambitious rebuilding of the team ahead of the new era of technical regulations that will begin in 2026. “Carlos will be a fundamental part of our project to get back to the front of the grid,” said the team. So far, in his first year with the legendary team, the step forward has been evident compared to last season’s results.
However, the contract includes flexibility clauses that could allow for an early departure if certain sporting or strategic conditions are met. This keeps speculation alive about his future beyond 2026.
McLaren and the return of Carlos Sainz
Beyond his talent, Carlos Sainz perfectly embodies what McLaren is looking for: experience, consistency, and tremendous teamwork skills. In his previous stint at Woking, the Spaniard was instrumental in revitalizing the team, both on and off the track. His good chemistry with those around him and his technical involvement are also key factors, which would explain why the door remains open for him.
Although the current duo of Norris and Piastri is performing at a very high level—second and first respectively in the Drivers’ Championship—Formula 1 is a sport that leaves no room for things to remain unchanged for too long. If either of them were to leave McLaren, whether due to interest from other teams or decisions made by McLaren itself, it could present a unique opportunity for Sainz to once again don the papaya orange overalls.
In an increasingly fierce driver market, McLaren understands that it is essential to have valid alternatives in the pipeline. And, based on the words of Zak Brown, the message is clear that Carlos Sainz remains a priority option for the future of the British team.
