Alaba clings to his contract… but Xabi makes a decision that puts his future in doubt

Since the start of 2025, one of the soap operas that has dominated the headlines at Real Madrid has been the renewal of Vinicius‘ contract. Since the alleged interest from Saudi Arabia in the player was made public, rumors and demands from the player to stay at the club have been growing, but the truth is that at the moment, the renewal is at a standstill. The player still has two years left on his contract and both parties appear calm but convinced that there will be movement sooner rather than later.

Vinicius’ situation

Vinicius has had one of his worst seasons with Real Madrid since arriving at the club. His development over the years has been exponential, until this season, where he has lost prominence, has not been as decisive as in previous seasons, and, most worryingly, his attitude has changed and his involvement in the team has been far from what is expected of a leader in today’s football.

A season marked by poor play, but also by unsportsmanlike behavior that has not been well received, with statements to the media that have not been appreciated by either Real Madrid’s management or its fans, and which have even led to the player being questioned.

Vinicius’ contract renewal and the offer from Saudi Arabia

The truth is that there was talk of a million-dollar offer that Vinicius received from Saudi Arabia, $1 billion for five seasons, but there is no real evidence that this offer is actually on the table, and it seems more like a move by agents to put pressure on the negotiations for his renewal. The Brazilian footballer wants to be the highest-paid player on the squad and is asking for $30 million net per season, a figure that Real Madrid is not willing to pay.

The tug-of-war between Vinicius and Florentino Pérez could become more tense as time goes by, and both will have to reach a meeting point to carry out the negotiations. The club wants to renew his contract, but they are saying the same thing they have been saying for years: the squad is above the individual, and no player is expendable. If he has to leave, others will come in who will continue to raise the level of Real Madrid.

Florentino Pérez’s alternative

Florentino Pérez has all the alternatives in mind and also has an alternative in case an offer for Vinicius finally arrives and the player ends up leaving Real Madrid. According to the British media outlet The Athletic, Vinicius’ departure from Real Madrid would leave the club with a whopping €300 million. With this money, he would go all out to sign Haaland. In his mind, he believes that a duo formed by Mbappé and the Norwegian would be lethal, as there would be no conflict of positions, since the two have different roles on the field. In fact, it would be beneficial for both to be together on the field and would pose a problem for all their rivals.

The renewal of Vinicius‘ contract is now at a standstill. Everything indicates that an agreement will finally be reached to extend the Brazilian’s contract, but Real Madrid is open to considering other options. They do not seem happy with the player’s performance this season and fear that he does not want to, cannot, or does not know how to return to the path that has led him to become one of the stars of world football. Meetings were scheduled for this summer, and we will see if both parties can come to an understanding to prevent the soap opera from dragging on any longer.
