The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a welfare program run by the government to provide an income to retirees and other vulnerable Americans across the country. The program is primarily funded with revenue from the taxes of the current cohort of working individuals.
The SSA plans out its payment schedule for Social Security benefit checks, as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks well in advance and for the full year. This schedule is then uploaded to the agency’s website at the beginning of the year.
Since this monthly check is often the sole source of income for the millions of individuals who are signed up to this program, knowing the dates on which they will receive payment in advance can be extremely helpful to them when planning out their budgets each month.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to be paid early for June
For this month of May, as of today, two checks would have already been sent out to beneficiaries. This first check that went out on the 1st of the month was a Supplemental Security Income check. The next check that was sent out was the regular Social Security benefit for beneficiaries born from the 1st to the 10th of the month. This check was scheduled to have gone out on May 14th.
The next two Social Security benefit checks will go out on May 21st and May 28th and these will be for beneficiaries born from the 11th to the 20th of the month, and those born from the 21st to the 31st of the month respectively.
These are not the final checks that the SSA will be sending out for the month of May, however. According to the agency’s schedule, one more SSI check will be sent out to those who qualify for the supplemental income. This second SSI payment is scheduled for May 30th.
Why is there a second SSI payment in May?
As most beneficiaries would have noted by now, there will be two SSI payments made by the SSA for the month of May. It is, however, incredibly crucial for beneficiaries of SSI to know that this additional SSI check in May is not a freebie or gift from the agency.
The May 30th SSI payment is the SSI benefit to be used for the month of June. Subsequently, there will be no SSI payments at all for the entirety of the month of June and as such, SSI beneficiaries should exercise caution of this when planning out their budgets for May and June. Additionally, this means that the next SSI check will only be sent out in July on the date stipulated in the agency’s payment schedule for 2025 (July 1st).
According to the SSA, this decision to make the SSI payment at the end of the previous month rather than at the beginning of the month it is intended for is to ensure that the beneficiaries of SSI are able to have full access to their funds for the new month as it begins.
Furthermore, for the months of August and October, the payment schedule will be similar, meaning that September’s SSI check will be sent out at the end of August and November’s SSI check will be sent out at the end of October. As a result, there will be no SSI payments for the months of September and November.
Beneficiaries do not need to take any action regarding these early payments as they are clearly stipulated on the SSA’s official Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments.
Additionally, beneficiaries who receive both the regular Social Security, as well as SSI benefits should note that their payment date may differ slightly. According to the SSA, “if you received Social Security before May 1997 or if receiving both Social Security & SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.”
