Social Security Just Changed Under DOGE – What the Government Has Already Done

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a government run program tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the smooth rollout of benefit checks for millions and millions of vulnerable Americans such as retirees or disabled individuals each month.

Due to the sheer volume of beneficiaries, the SSA cannot send out all of its payments on one day. Instead, the SSA has established a payment schedule that sends out Social Security checks on every Wednesday throughout the month. The date on which a beneficiary will receive their check is determined in relation to their date of birth.

Here is what to know about the Social Security benefit payments for the upcoming month of June.

Social Security benefits for June

Retirement, disability, or survivor benefits are paid to qualifying individuals by the SSA each month. At present, there are more than 70 million Americans signed up to receive benefits from the agency. The vast majority of beneficiaries will receive their benefits on the second, third, and fourth, Wednesday of each month in relation to their date of birth.

Those born during the first third of the month will receive their benefits on the second Wednesday of each month, those born during the second third of the month will receive their benefits on the third Wednesday of the month, and lastly, those born in the last ten days of the month will receive their benefits on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

For individuals who have been claiming Social Security benefits since before May of 1997, however, their payment dates may differ slightly. These differing dates will apply to beneficiaries who collect SSI benefits in addition to Social Security as well. SSI is the Supplemental Security Income and is paid to adults and children with disabilities or blindness, as well as those aged above 65 with little or no other source of income.

Listed below are the benefit payment dates for June 2025:

  • June 3, Tuesday: Retirement benefits for individuals who have been claiming since before May 1997, as well as retirees who qualify for SSI benefits.
  • June 11, Wednesday: Retirement, spousal and survivor benefits for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of a calendar month.
  • June 18, Wednesday: Benefits for beneficiaries born between the 11th and the 20th of the month.
  • June 25, Wednesday: Benefits for beneficiaries born between the 21st and the 31st of the month.

If your payment does not arrive on the stipulated date, a beneficiary should allow a grace period of three working days before contacting the agency. Public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays are not considered working days.

How much does a benefit amount to?

As of January, the average Social Security retirement benefit amount stands at $1,976 per month. The exact figure differs from individual to individual as it is calculated in relation to the age at which one begins claiming. The following figures are the highest possible payouts:

  • At the earliest eligibility (age 62): up to $2,831
  • At full retirement age (age 67): up to $4,018
  • At the maximum delay (age 70): up to $5,108

The actual benefit a person will receive is determined using factors such as lifetime earnings and how long they had paid into Social Security whilst still working.

The maximum SSI monthly payment for 2025 stands at $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. Factors such as income or living arrangements could reduce this amount, however.

Each year, benefits are increased, or rather adjusted slightly so as to account for the effects of inflation. This is known as the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). For 2025, beneficiaries saw a 2.5% increase to their benefits as of January. The COLA is calculated using data from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which analyses the spending patterns of working Americans.

The average third quarter CPI-W is compared to that of the previous year’s third quarter and the new COLA is established if there is an increase by rounding the difference to the nearest tenth of a percentage.
