Xabi Alonso has officially taken charge at Real Madrid, and his first major task will be shaping a new squad — both for the upcoming Club World Cup and for a demanding 2024–25 season. As always, the club’s goal remains the same: compete for every title. Alonso knows what’s expected — and now, he must balance arrivals and departures to build a team worthy of that mission.
Who’s coming to Real Madrid?
Although many names have been linked with Los Blancos, the only confirmed signing so far is Dean Huijsen. The next big arrival could be Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose signing is reportedly close to being finalized. The expectation is that he’ll join the squad for next season — and possibly in time for the Club World Cup.
There’s a catch, though: his current contract runs through June 30, which technically means he can’t be registered for the tournament just yet. However, talks between clubs are underway, and it’s expected that this will be resolved within the week.
Other signings in question
The left-back position remains unresolved. Álvaro Carreras has been the favorite, but negotiations have proven difficult. Grimaldo is still an option, and the club hopes to settle the matter before the Club World Cup.
In midfield, Xabi Alonso will play a central role in the final decision. While the manager insists he’s there to “work in consensus, not impose,” the midfield is his natural territory — and crucial to his tactical system. Two names gaining traction are Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández, though Alonso may have other ideas.
Finally, there’s the possibility of bringing in a true No. 9 — a striker in the mold of Joselu: a classic finisher who can dominate the box, something the current squad lacks.
Who could be leaving Real Madrid?
Before new players come in, others will need to make room. The biggest name in the rumor mill is Rodrygo. Despite his quality, he’s seen as expendable, and he’s reportedly received strong offers. Still, his recent statements suggest he wants to stay in Madrid.
Eduardo Camavinga has also drawn interest. Real Madrid could earn a significant fee for the French midfielder, but his recent injury might complicate a potential move. With Luka Modrić now confirmed to be leaving, Camavinga could get another chance to shine next season.
At left back, Fran García appears to be out of Xabi Alonso’s plans. However, his departure won’t be easy. Unless a club offers a salary close to what he earns at Real Madrid — which is unlikely — a loan deal covering part of his wages may be the only way out.
No exits before the Club World Cup
What is clear: no major departures are expected before the Club World Cup. All players currently in the squad are available to Xabi Alonso and may still play an important role — at least in the short term.
