Xabi Alonso remains set on signing a striker: a new summer option emerges

Barça has just sealed one of the most promising signings in its history with Lamine Yamal, without spending a single euro on transfer fees. The player, just 17 years old, has renewed until 2031 and has become the club’s brightest jewel. His meteoric rise to the first team, especially during the treble-winning season, has sparked a media frenzy.

Barça seals a new deal with Lamine Yamal, in line with his level and cachet (with PSG on alert)

This is not just any contract. It was signed in line with his level, but also with his cachet, the best in the entire Barça squad. This was agreed by his agent, the ever-present Jorge Mendes, with the club’s representatives: Deco, as sporting director, and Joan Laporta as president.

The negotiations involved the essential participation of the footballer’s parents, as the young man is still a minor. It was they, Mounir Nasraoui and Sheila Ebana, who were reluctant until the last moment to rush into signing the contract. The rush to sign his new contract was due to the same fear as always: PSG.

PSG has been insisting on signing the player (and his family) since the days of Xavi Hernández. At that time, they offered €100 million on the table. Nearly two years later, in May 2025, with Lamine already established as one of the world’s top players and a candidate for the next Ballon d’Or, Barça had to rush again to renew the youth player’s contract.

This was because Jorge Mendes, who wanted to take him to the highest bidder, of course, was in contact with the Parisian team’s management, who, although they never reached anything formal, were fearful of a repeat of what happened with Neymar, albeit on a much smaller scale.

Barça secures its star: a salary of between 15 and 20 million, a bonus for the Ballon d’Or…

Now, Lamine Yamal will rise to the top as the youngest player on the squad with his entire career ahead of him. Barça has secured its star, but it could backfire in the coming years. There is a risk that he will continue to improve, which could lead him to knock on Laporta’s door in search of a better contract.

That is where Lamine Yamal, Jorge Mendes, and his father, in particular, asked for a series of clauses to be included in his new contract, effective on July 13, until 2031. His salary will increase each year. First, the first year will have a fixed salary of around €8 million net, but with easily achievable variables and an extra bonus for winning the Ballon d’Or, which could make him the highest-paid player on the squad. The release clause remains at €1 billion.

In any case, after that first year, he will earn around €15 million per year. And if you take into account all the bonuses, most of which are easy to achieve, it will be close to 20. “Lamine loves playing for Barcelona,” Hansi Flick said after Laporta told him that his star player’s future was assured.

He has asked Flick to join the group of free kick and penalty takers and to participate in set pieces

Among the new features is an unusual but revealing clause: Barça’s new number 10 will receive a financial bonus for every Ballon d’Or he wins. This symbolic and ambitious bonus illustrates the club’s confidence in the player’s future and at the same time fuels his own personal motivation.

In addition, the club has also asked coach Hansi Flick to include him in the group of free kick and penalty takers, as well as to participate in set pieces, such as free kicks and corners, sharing responsibility with Fermín López and Ferran Torres.

The club, chaired by Joan Laporta, has secured one of the pillars of Hansi Flick’s project after winning the league and Copa del Rey double last season. No name has made more noise this season on the world stage than that of the Spanish striker of Moroccan origin, a gold mine for the club for the next decade. He had a contract until 2026 and his stay had been agreed for months, which has now been finalized.
