Aston Martin has managed to climb up the F1 grid following improvements implemented at the Italian Grand Prix and the wing adapted to the new regulations in Barcelona. The AMR25 has gone from fighting not to be the worst car on the grid to being in the middle of the pack and able to fight for points, a small step that seems unlikely to stop there. The Silverstone team is expected to introduce further improvements, and it looks like they will do so when they race at home in the British Grand Prix.

Aston Martin breaks into the midfield in F1

The triple-header of races in recent weeks was marked in red on the Aston Martin calendar. In the first of the three races, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the British team introduced updates to improve the performance of the AMR25. The car went from fighting with Sauber not to be the worst team on the grid to getting both cars into Q3. Although the race did not go the team’s way, with no points scored, it proved that the improvements were working.

At the Monaco Grand Prix, it was confirmed that the updates were a success. On a circuit that did not suit the specifications of the AMR25, which is very vulnerable on slow corners, Fernando Alonso managed to place the car among the best in qualifying. This time it was the engine that prevented the Spaniard from finishing in the points.

And in Barcelona, where the new wing specifications were added to the new FIA regulations, Fernando Alonso also managed to get into Q3, and a lack of tires prevented him from improving on tenth place, which nevertheless confirmed the team’s progress. This time, the race went in Fernando Alonso’s favor, as he scored his first two points of the season to finish ninth.

The Oviedo-born driver himself was satisfied with how this triple-header had gone at the end of the race and was very encouraging in confirming that the car still has several tenths to find to fight for the top seven.

Next update at Silverstone

F1 is taking a short two-week break—the new calendar makes what used to be the usual break between races in previous seasons seem like an excessive amount of time—and traveling to Canada. For this race, no changes are expected beyond finding the right data correlation to squeeze out those extra tenths that are still hidden in the AMR25. Then it’s on to Austria, where no changes are expected either. But for the next race, the F1 Silverstone Grand Prix, the home race, Aston Martin is preparing new updates. This was confirmed by Adrian Newey, who, although still focused on the 2026 development, is keeping an eye on current developments.

“There is a small core team working on the 2025 car and will continue to do so for a few more months. We will have an update around Silverstone. So I’ve been chatting with the core team about what they’re doing, discussing ideas, contributing some, and we’ll see how we get there.”

As revealed by Aston Martin several weeks ago, the AMR25 will be used to test aspects of next season’s car—provided the regulations allow it—so it is to be expected that the Silverstone updates will not be the last for the AMR25 and that more may come once we get through the summer break.

The team’s feelings seem to be getting better and better. The goal of improving the AMR25 is not only to finish the year well, but also to reaffirm that the team is on the right track, working towards 2026 so that all the pieces of the puzzle can fit together to fight for the top of the grid and become one of the benchmarks in the sport.
