The Ford Motor Company has recalled approximately 1.1 million vehicles across its Ford and Lincoln models due to a software issue that was affecting the rearview cameras. The defect can cause the images shown on the camera to freeze, delay or even fail to display when the vehicle is in reverse, increasing the risk of an accident.

In 2024 only, over 29 million vehicles were recalled in the United States as a result of safety concerns. This shows that vehicle recalls are more common than one may think. The recalls range from minor software issues to serious mechanical failures, and this poses significant threat to drivers, passengers and other road uses.

Why Vehicle Recalls Matter

Recalls are issued when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies a safety-related issue in the vehicle. These issues can lead to accidents, injuries, or even deaths if they are not attended to. For example, Toyota recalled over 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models from 2022 to 2025 due to an issue with the reverse lights, which could fail to work and increase the risk of an accident.

Background and Regulatory Actions

The NHTSA implemented and investigation after receiving 37 complaints from vehicle owners between 2021 and 2023 regarding rearview camera malfunctions. Ford engineers replicated and confirmed the malfunction in April 2025. To date, there has been one reported minor crash related to this issue, resulting in property damage but no injuries

This recall with Ford follows previous issues with rearview cameras in their vehicles. In 2024, Ford agreed to pay a civil penalty of up to $165 million to the U.S. government for moving too slowly on a recall and failing to provide proper recall information. The NHTSA mentioned that Ford was too slow to recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras and failed to give the agency complete information, as required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Affected Models and Years

The recall impacts a range of Ford and Lincoln vehicle models manufactured between 2021 and 2025, including:

  • Ford
    • 2021-2024 F-150
    • 2021-2024 Edge
    • 2022-2025 Transit
    • 2021-2024 Bronco
    • 2023-2024 F-250
    • 2023-2024 F-350
    • 2023-2024 F-450
    • 2023-2024 F-550
    • 2023-2024 F-600
    • 2022-2024 Expedition
    • 2023-2024 Escape
    • 2021-2023 Mach-E
    • 2024 Mustang
    • 2024 Ranger
  • Lincoln
    • 2021-2023 Nautilus
    • 2022-2024 Navigator
    • 2023-2024 Corsair

How to Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected

Citizens who want to check if their car is on the recall list can visit the NHTSA’s recall website at nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Alternatively, owners can contact Ford customer service or their local dealership for assistance.

What to Do If Your Vehicle Is Recalled

If you discover that your vehicle has an open recall:

  • Contact Your Dealership: Schedule an appointment with an authorized dealer to address the issue.
  • Free Repairs: There is no cost related to repairs on recall vehicles regardless of whether you purchased the vehicle new or used .
  • Timely Action: Make sure you take action on time because some recalls involve critical safety components like brakes or airbags. Prompt repairs can prevent accidents.

Remedy and Owner Guidance

As of June 16th, 2025 Ford will notify affected vehicle owners by mail. Owners of vehicles will requested to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the APIM updated with the latest SYNC4 software. Some vehicles equipped with over-the-air (OTA) update capability can receive the fix remotely, eliminating the need for a dealership visit.

Stay Informed and Proactive

It is important for vehicle owners to stay informed about recalls so that they can take quick action. Remember to check for recalls regularly and encourage friends and family to do the same. For more information and to check your vehicle, visit
