Aston Martin continues to improve technical areas at the team’s factory and has announced a new signing to improve the most vulnerable aspects. Giles Wood, former head of simulation at Red Bull and one of Adrian Newey‘s trusted colleagues, joins the team to improve the accuracy of a simulator that is far from providing correct data for the design of the cars.
Aston Martin continues to invest in talent
Lawrence Stroll has spared no expense in strengthening Aston Martin in recent years, and it seems that he still has the wallet ready to continue expanding the workforce to achieve the objectives set, which is none other than reaching the top of Formula 1.
After building a new factory, equipping it with the best possible technology, and hiring countless staff and engineers to operate that technology, it seems that this is not enough, and the company continues to grow with top-level workers.
Giles Wood is the latest addition to the team, a former simulation manager at Red Bull who was instrumental in the team’s success and worked closely with Adrian Newey.
Giles Wood and the simulator
The new Aston Martin simulator promises to deliver superlative performance for the Aston Martin of the future, but the truth is that, at present, the calibration of this new tool is proving to be a headache for the team. Newey himself stated at the Monaco Grand Prix that the tool would take two years to become fully operational and reliable, something that was later denied by Andy Cowell, the team’s CEO.
That is why the team has decided to hire one of the best in this field, Giles Wood, a former Red Bull employee who was key to the team’s victories with Sebastian Vettel. During this period, he was the leader of the Austrian team’s simulation and analysis department. It is important to note that in recent years, Giles Wood had been working for Apple, completely removed from F1, so there will be no problems in incorporating him into the Aston Martin team’s working structure immediately.
Wood is now the new director of vehicle simulation and modeling at Aston Martin. His main task is to improve the correlation between the simulator and the track, in order to fine-tune a tool that is not yet reliable for the British team.
Adrian Newey, key to his signing
Adrian Newey has been one of the key figures in Giles Wood’s return to F1: between them, they led Red Bull’s winning project during the Sebastian Vettel era, and they are expected to do the same from now on. Newey, as we have mentioned, is not at all confident that the simulator will work properly in the short term, although the arrival of Giles Wood could change everything. Perhaps that is why he made his statements a week ago, to put pressure on the team to make a move and bring in more professionals who are capable of speeding up the process, something that is necessary in a world where every second counts.
Aston Martin remains committed to talent at all costs. Lawrence Stroll‘s obsession and determination to get the team to the top of F1 seems to know no bounds, and he continues to make great efforts to ensure that his team is among the best in the paddock next season.
