A major change is in the works with the Social Security Administration (SSA) and it is related to your Social Security Card. In pursuit of digitization, the SSA will be introducing a digital Social Security Number (SSN) card that can be accessed via your my Social Security account with ease. The introduction of a digital SSN card is an additional, easily accessible option for retrieving your SSN, and as such, it does not mean that the traditional paper SSN card will be phased out in any way.
The SSA has planned to roll out the digital SSN card system in summer of 2025. Here is what you need to know.
Social Security Card goes digital
By offering an additional digital option to access the SSN card, the SSA is providing a “significant enhancement” to my Social Security account holders. With the option to access your SSN digitally through your mobile device or computer, you can ensure that your paper card remains safe and is less susceptible to getting lost or misplaced. A digital SSN card will be especially helpful for situations where your Social Security number is needed but can be presented without having your paper card physically present, thereby reducing the potential for theft or fraud significantly.
“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”
As mentioned above, the introduction of a digital SSN card does not mean that the physical paper card will be discontinued. Rather, this digital access to your SSN is meant to be an additional, safer and more convenient method of displaying your SSN for any non-SSA transactions such as a job application or a financial transaction.
This new feature will also allow individuals who have lost their card or forgotten their Social Security number to access their SSN with ease whilst they wait for a replacement card to get mailed to them.
“This digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information,” explains the Social Security Administration. “By providing a secure digital option, SSA aims to reduce the risk of lost or stolen cards and enhance the overall user experience.
