An F1 driver’s ‘eternal’ gratitude to Alonso: “He saved my career”

Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid is on another level: a show, a win, and into the Round of 16 as group winners

The Club World Cup is an opportunity for participating teams to earn a significant amount of money, as the prize money is substantial. Real Madrid has performed well and, by advancing to the next round as the top team in its group, has already earned a substantial amount of money from its participation in the tournament. Florentino is pleased with the results, and the team is eager to continue advancing toward its ultimate goal of winning the first Club World Cup under this format.

Real Madrid in the World Cup

Real Madrid’s path in the Club World Cup has clearly gone from strength to strength. They started their campaign with little preparation and with the entire squad available, and Xabi Alonso opted to stick with a formation and starting eleven very similar to those used by Carlos Ancelotti, so what we saw on the pitch was more of the same. There was little fluidity in their play, a lack of a playmaker in midfield, and the forwards were very passive. The Whites could not get past a draw against Al Hilal, who at times had more possession than Madrid and beat Courtois with an avoidable penalty committed by Asencio. Fede Valverde was unable to convert the penalty against Bono to win the game.

Against Pacucha, the picture was very different. We began to see what Xabi Alonso wants, despite the team having to play with ten men from the 7th minute after Asencio was sent off. Even so, Madrid won 3-1, showing a team with a high line, high pressure, good ball movement, and the presence of an important Arda Guler on the pitch.

The team’s good performance meant that Xabi Alonso made few changes to the starting eleven, but if he had changed the formation, he would have opted for his favorite formation with Bayer Leverkusen, a 1-5-3-2. The team played as a unit, controlling the game and beating Salzburg 3-0 to finish top of the group and set up a clash with Juventus on July 1.

The money Real Madrid has already earned

Real Madrid’s progress in the Club World Cup is good news on a sporting level, but also financially for the club. Just by landing in Miami to participate in the tournament, Real Madrid has already earned €30.46 million. The two victories added €3.41 million and the draw against Al Hilal €0.85 million. Qualifying for the round of 16 has earned them €6.4 million. In other words, the Whites have already accumulated a total of €41.13 million.

Once qualified, a win in the round of 16 will earn them $7.5 million (€7 million) and if they win in the quarter-finals, $13.125 million (€12 million). From here on, the figures begin to be astronomical: the semifinals are worth $21 million (€20 million) and the final, $40 million (€37 million).
