Alonso scored points in Barcelona, Montreal, Austria, and Silverstone. Four consecutive races. Proof that Aston Martin has improved and started to close the gap. The green team appreciates this, as does Stroll.
Lance Stroll has more points in the World Championship, but Alonso beats him in every aspect
Despite the step forward shown by the AMR25, Lance Stroll has only scored points in the last rainy race of the British Grand Prix, with a strategy from the pit wall that benefited the Canadian and did not please the Spaniard at all.
More improvements are coming. After Silverstone, they will arrive at the next Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, where some new parts will be on display. However, everything indicates that these new features will continue to show what we have seen so far: Alonso has swept Stroll aside in 2025. Yes, even with those first two races where he was forced to retire.
12-0 in qualifying, 8-4 in the race, more Q3s, more races in the points…
For Aston Martin, there may not be such a big difference when comparing results. But the truth is that, beyond the fact that Alonso has scored fewer points (16 compared to Stroll’s 20), in more than half of the races this year (7), the Spaniard finished ahead of his teammate, but also, in qualifying, he has beaten Lance 12-0, equaling Max Verstappen’s record until last year, which he could surpass in the next Belgian Grand Prix.
With all this, the Asturian has been able to get the most out of situations when the car was weighing him down, while Lance has not been able to ‘cancel out’ the Aston’s weaknesses.
Fernando Alonso hinted at this in his post-qualifying comments at the Monaco Grand Prix, when he spoke of the “contrast” between the “bad results” and his “very high level,” recalling that he had beaten Stroll 8-0 in qualifying. Now, the Saturday tally stands at 12.
Along with Verstappen, he is the only driver to have beaten his teammate in every qualifying session
In fact, along with Max Verstappen, he is the only driver to have beaten his teammate in every qualifying session. In addition, Stroll has been eliminated in Q1 on seven of the 12 occasions, while Alonso has achieved three consecutive Q3s and another ninth place on Saturday at Silverstone, always making it through to Q2 except in Miami. There, he was eliminated in Q1 in Saturday’s qualifying after his miracle on Friday in the sprint qualifying, where he put an Aston Martin in the top 10 for the first time this year. But that is not reflected in the points.
“Once again, I think I’ve done a very good lap. Two and a half tenths behind Lance, I’m still unbeaten in qualifying and I think we’re getting good laps in qualifying and good races,” said Fernando in Miami, when the car was barely better than the last on the grid.
In the race, the balance also favors the Oviedo driver with an impressive 8-4. In fact, three of the four times that ‘18’ finished ahead were under very specific circumstances: in Australia, Alonso suffered an accident that forced him to retire when he hit the gravel debris from another car; in China, his car suffered brake problems that meant he did not finish the race; and in Monaco, an engine problem left him with no chance from the start. Without these setbacks, the numbers would be even better than they already are.
Since 2023, Stroll has been completely outclassed
Looking at the overall picture, since Fernando Alonso landed at Aston Martin in 2023, these statistics are magnified even more. Two years ago, Stroll was completely outclassed. The Asturian achieved eight podiums and 206 points in the 2023 championship, finishing the World Championship in fourth place. His teammate failed to finish any race in the top three and could only manage tenth in the world championship, with 74 points.
In 2024, things continued in the same vein between the two, although the AMR24—except for the first few races—was never up to the standard of the best. Neither managed to get on the podium, but Alonso was consistently ahead again, scoring 70 points to the Canadian’s 24. In the race duel, Fernando Alonso won 17 to 7, in the standings, 19 to 5, and in the number of times he scored points, the Canadian also lost 6 to 14.
Sometimes statistics don’t really reflect what happened throughout the season. But in cases of this magnitude, when the difference is so clear, they make it obvious that in this case, Lance is not helping Aston Martin make the leap they are looking for ahead of the new 2026 regulations.
