The Social Security program has been running for close to a century now with over 70 million beneficiaries such as retirees, disabled individuals, and survivors. For many of these beneficiaries, these monthly benefit checks act as a primary source of income that enables these vulnerable Americans to cover their expenses. As such, the SSA uploads its payment schedule for the full year well in advance, allowing beneficiaries to plan out their budgets with ease.
There are several types of benefits paid out by the SSA, such as the regular Social Security benefit which is paid to retirees, the Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, which is paid to adults, the blind, and in some cases children, all of whom have little or no other resources, and the Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, which is paid to disabled individuals. Here is what you need to know regarding the upcoming benefit payments for August.
Upcoming Social Security benefit payment schedule
The regular Social Security benefits roll out on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month in relation to the recipient’s date of birth. The Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is also paid out on the same schedule as the regular Social Security benefit. The payment dates for July for both of these benefits are as follows:
- Second Wednesday, July 9th – recipients with birth dates from the 1st of the month to the 10th
- Third Wednesday, July 16th – recipients with birth dates from the 11th of the month to the 20th
- Fourth Wednesday, July 23rd – recipients with birth dates from the 21st of the month to the 31st
However, the SSA’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments does note that payment dates may differ slightly “if you received Social Security before
May 1997 or if receiving both Social Security & SSI,” and in these cases, “Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.”
The payment dates for August SSDI and Social Security benefits will follow a similar schedule and as such, payments will roll out on the following dates:
- Second Wednesday, August 13th – recipients with birth dates from the 1st of the month to the 10th
- Third Wednesday, August 20th – recipients with birth dates from the 11th of the month to the 20th
- Fourth Wednesday, August 27th – recipients with birth dates from the 21st of the month to the 31st
SSI, or the Supplemental Security Income, payments generally roll out on the first of each month, however these dates do sometimes fluctuate if the first of the month falls on a weekend or a holiday, however, the changed dated will still be marked as such on the SSA’s official payment schedule, meaning that SSI recipients need not take any action if the first of the month falls on a holiday or weekend.
How much is an SSDI check?
The retiree Social Security benefit and the SSDI are quite similar in nature. The Social Security benefit for a retiree is calculated in relation to the income earned during their employment period since 12.4% of your wages are paid into Social Security payroll taxes (6.2% is paid by the employee and 6.2% is paid by the employer). Similarly, the SSDI benefit is also calculated using the average earnings during the lifetime of the individual prior to when their disability began.
According to the Social Security Administration, individuals with the following can be eligible for SSDI benefits:
- A disability or blindness, and
- Enough work history.
For the current year 2025, the average SSDI checks comes out to around $1,537. A more detailed breakdown of the current SSDI benefit amounts on average are as follows:
- Single Disabled Worker – $1,537 per month
- Disabled Worker with Spouse and One or More Children – $2,720 per month
- Maximum SSDI Benefit (if the recipient had high earnings) – $3,822 per month
The SSA also notes that if an individual qualifies for SSDI benefits, their “benefits may include a monthly payment and Medicare.”
