The Barcelona remains fully immersed in the transfer market with the clear objective of improving the squad and being able to storm the Champions League, a competition it last won 10 years ago. For now, the Azulgranas have managed to sign Joan García and now, the latest arrival at Can Barça, is Marcus Rashford. With the goalkeeper and forward positions covered, the midfield is well stocked, but they still need to strengthen the defense, as they want Hansi Flick’s team to start from the back, and one of the chosen ones is Denzel Dumfries.
In recent weeks, various reports have been linking the striker with a move to Barcelona. At the beginning of the summer, the name of Nico Williams was mentioned, and when it seemed that everything was done and that the Athletic Club winger was going to become a Barcelona player, the Basque club surprised everyone by announcing his renewal. Then it was Luis Díaz’s turn, although for financial reasons, he was practically unaffordable for Barça, who ended up looking for a player elsewhere.
That’s when Marcus Rashford appeared on the scene, as both Manchester United and the player himself wanted to part ways. The English international had been courted by Barcelona on several occasions and was even willing to take a pay cut to move to the Catalan capital. Finally, the deal has gone through and the Brit will arrive on loan with an option to buy. This means that the Catalan club has managed to sign a top-level player at virtually no cost, which means that the money in the Camp Nou coffers can be used to sign a defender, who could end up being Denzel Dumfries.
The price of Dumfries
Various reports suggest that the sporting management of Barcelona has the name of Denzel Dumfries on its agenda. It is claimed that they have not yet begun talks with Inter Milan, but the player could leave the Giuseppe Meazza at a fairly affordable price, as his contract, which runs until 2028, includes a release clause of €25 million. However, there is some small print, as this figure will only be valid until July 31.
That is why, if Barcelona wants to sign Denzel Dumfries to strengthen Hansi Flick’s defense, they will have to move quickly to take advantage of this offer. If the deal is not completed before July 31, the Dutch full-back would cost around €40 million, a figure that Barça may not be able to afford for a defender when they are still fighting to register new signings Joan García and Marcus Rashford.
Strengthening the defense with Dumfries
As we have already mentioned, the rest of the squad seems to be complete, but the defense still needs some reinforcements. With Alejandro Balde and Gerard Martín on the left wing, where Héctor Fort can also play, they could be assured that they will not need to look for anyone else. At the heart of the defense would be Íñigo Martínez, Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen, with the latter being the leading candidate to leave Camp Nou this summer.
On the right-back position, there is a need to strengthen this area of the field, as there is only Jules Koundé, who actually arrived at Barcelona to play as a center back. The Frenchman has performed quite well on the right wing, but with Denzel Dumfries, they could have more speed and depth, allowing the former Sevilla player to move to the center of defense, which is his preferred position.
