After one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded that hit the Pacific Ocean, just of Russia’s far east coast and coming in with measurements of an astounding 8.8 magnitude, the United States of America, China, Japan and the Philippines are preparing for tsunamis. All residents living along the shoreline are advised to precautions and safeguard their families.
Tsunami Warnings and Advisories Across the U.S. West Coast
In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Tsunami Warning Centre (TWC) has issued a high-level alert tsunami warning for Hawaii as well as the Northern parts of California. However, other parts of the U.S. such as Oregon to Southern California, have also been placed under warning but a lower-level alert.
As threat levels were reassessed, the Aleutian Island in Alaska was downgraded to an advisory, however even though threats were decreased, officials are still monitoring the area closely.
In countries such as Russia, Japan and other East Asian countries, weather departments have put similar warnings in place.
Waves Expected to Hit West Coast Late at Night
According to TWC, waves are currently progressing across the Pacific. Current data shows that waves are expected to hit parts of Oregon and Washington around 11:35p.m (Pacific Time). In California, the coast is expected to experience waves likely after 11:50p.m (Pacific Time). Thereafter, waves are expected to reach San Francisco approximately around 12:40 a.m (Pacific Time). In Los Angeles, they are expected to feel the impact by approximately 1:00 a.m (Pacific Time).
The data mentioned above is from projections and it depends on how the wave energies move through the ocean. Current data is being analysed, and residents must adhere to protocol, avoid going to any beaches or harbours and follow all instructions from emergency response departments.
Potential Impact Areas in Hawaii
In Hawaii, there is a total of eight islands. All these islands have been issued with tsunami warnings. Local authorities are humbly requesting residents to necessary precautions. There are areas that are prone to more damage than others, however regardless of the area, residents are requested to move as far away as possible from coastal areas.
In a press conference held on Tuesday evening, the Governor of Hawaii, Josh Green gave his input and mentioned that as it stands, Hawaii has not yet felt any consequences from the waves and no property damage or injuries have been reported. Green also mentioned that the power will remain on, and emergency shelters will remain open.
Air travel Restrictions
It is rather fortunate that airports have not been affected directly. Still, in order to take necessary safety measures, all flights to and from Maui were cancelled for the night. Officials working at the airport noted that this was a part of the prevention measures.
The current situation is being monitored carefully, and any progression would be made public. Passengers who planned to travel must consult with the relevant airlines for any updates.
All emergency services are on standby, as the waves reaches many areas. Residents in coastal areas are requested to see safety.
Conclusion: Prepare yourself and be safe
The reason that communities are requested to stay alert, is because of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake, even though present data shows that the tsunami may cause severe damage.
Weather departments and emergency services are actively analysing wave patterns, and all verified updates will be provided at the situation unfolds.
All those in areas of high-risk, this is a time for extreme caution. Be sure to follow all instructions and adhere to local alerts!
