Not a day of peace at FC Barcelona. With registrations pending a week before the start of LaLiga and the war with Ter Stegen at its height, now a new problem is knocking on the door. UEFA has fined both Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski €5,000 each for violating anti-doping regulations after the last Champions League match. The news comes a day after both were named among the 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or and with the Polish player injured for Sunday’s match.
Why are Lamine and Lewandowski being fined?
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) announced the decisions taken after its meeting on July 31, 2025, and several of those decisions affect FC Barcelona following their match against Inter Milan at the Guiseppe Meazza, which saw them knocked out of the Champions League final. The most striking is that Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski have been fined €5,000 each.
The reason for the sanction is “failure to comply with the instructions of the Doping Control Officer, Article 21.8 of the UEFA Anti-Doping Regulations,” to which is added “failure to report immediately to the Doping Control Station, Article 21.10 (a) of the UEFA Anti-Doping Regulations.”
Hansi Flick also sanctioned
This is not the only sanction received by the Barcelona team. Hansi Flick has also been punished with a one-match ban, the first to be played this season in the Champions League, for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, Article 11(1) RD, and for violating the basic standards of decent behavior, Article 11(2)(b) RD. The sanction also carries a fine of €20,000. The club has also been fined €5,250 for throwing objects (Art. 16(2)(b) DR) and €2,500 for setting off fireworks (Art. 16(2)(c) DR) during the match.
Lewandowski out with injury for Sunday
The bad news for Robert Lewandowski and the club does not end there, as the Polish player is injured. The club announced this morning that he will not be available for the final preseason match on Sunday in the Joan Gamper Trophy, which will be played at 9 p.m. at the Johan Cruyff Stadium against Italian side Como, coached by former Barça player Cesc Fábregas.
The club announced in an official statement that “the player Robert Lewandowski has muscle discomfort in his left thigh. He is out for Sunday and his recovery will determine his availability.” Barcelona did not specify how long the Barça number 9 is expected to be out, so we will have to wait and see how he progresses and whether he will be available for the start of the league season on Saturday 16.
