Modern technology resulting in more convenience! The Department of Motor Vehicles is working on a new process which could mean carrying your drivers license on your phone. Even though these changes may not happen overnight, DMV Commissioner Paul Tine says the agency is exploring a mobile driver’s license system that would make renewing and updating credentials faster and easier than ever before.
From Wallet to Smartphone
The idea is a pretty simple and straightforward one, the exact same information that you have on your physical drivers license would also be in a digital form on your mobile phone. This makes things more convenient as you don’t need to dig in your wallet and waste time looking for your license card. This will now be available on your mobile device, just open the app, verify your identity and there’s your license!
The advantage? License renewals could be completed more quickly and efficiently. Commissioner Tine explains that, instead of suddenly realizing your license has expired, you’d get a push notification reminding you ahead of time. You could then start the renewal process right from your phone, unless an eye test or other in-office procedure is needed.
Updating Information Instantly
Another factor is that a mobile driver’s license could also be updated at any time. Should your address change or you change your name, the digital license would show those changes immediately. This reduces the risk of you having a license with old information.
The other factor is that physical cards could get lost easily, stolen or even damaged. The digital license would increase the safety and security, as it would lead to lesser card thefts or losses.
Built-In Security Features
This new system would be directly connected to the DMV. This would ensure that any information that is shared is verified and real. So, do you need to renew your license? This app would send you a notification to submit the documents for renewal and thereafter use the facial recognition feature to confirm your identity.
Should there be a need for an in-person visit, this app would give you the nearest office to go to. These new methods make things more efficient all while maintaining safety and security.
Still in the Planning Stage
There is no set date for this might be launched, but Commissioner Tine says, “We want to meet the customer where they are today, not where they were back in 1995,” Commissioner Tine says. “Our systems, people, and processes need to reflect that.”
Learning From Other States
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), there are 14 states which have implemented similar programs. These programs are assisting with setting the standard for improved security and efficiency.
Strategic Plan for Modernization
In the meantime, the DMV is working on a five-year strategic plan, which is expected to be finalized by December. The plan includes:
- Upgrading scanning equipment used by license examiners.
- Digitizing paper forms to reduce processing times and reliance on physical records.
- Adding modern payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay for greater convenience.
These improvements are part of a broader effort to improve services and create a more easier experience for customers.
A Step Toward the Future
Many drivers would be relieved by change from traditional license cards to having the license appear in secure manner on their mobile device. This procedure screams efficiency and convenience. DMV’s focus still remains on improving current operations and putting in place newer technology to increase efficiency.
Commissioner Tine highlights that the goal is to provide service that meets the expectations of customers, and that service must be fast, convenient and secure.
