Over 103,000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks are being recalled after the company discovered a problem with the rear axle hub bolts. This defect could cause the truck to roll away when parked or lose driving power while in motion. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned that either occurrence can increase the risk of a crash.

What’s Causing the Recall?

The cause of the recall is the rear axle hub bolts, which play a critical role in keeping the wheel hubs securely attached to the axle. This connection is responsible for the transmission of power from the drivetrain to the wheels. The connection also supports the weight of the truck.

Due to fatigue in the bolt, it ends up breaking, which then damages the axle hub splines (grooved teeth that lock the axle and hub together).

When the connection fails, two things could happen:

  1. A parked truck could roll away when the emergency brake is not engaged.
  2. A driver could lose power to propel the truck when in motion.

Which F-150 Models Are Affected?

Vehicles in the recalled group are certain 2023-2025 Ford F-150s built between January 2, 2023, and May 21, 2025. These models are equipped with Trailer Tow:

  • Trailer Tow Max Duty package
  • 9.75-inch heavy-duty axle
  • Three-quarter float design

The official Ford recall number is 25S82.

How to Check for Warning Signs in Seconds

According to the NHTSA, one of the early signs of the defect is a clicking noise from the rear of the vehicle.  The sound may escalate to a rattling noise when the bolt fails.

Although only 1% of trucks will be affected, Ford is urging owners of vehicles in the recalled group to take their cars for inspection.

Ford Outlines Free Fix for the Defect

So far, no crashes or injuries relating to the axle bolt defect have been reported. However, Ford has received around 200 warranty claims related to broken rear axle bolts. Owners of the recalled group will receive notification letters from August 18, 2025. Ford estimates that by May 22, 2026, every driver will have received the recall letter.

Drivers will visit a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the left and right axle shafts assembled.

How to Check If Your Truck Is Included in Seconds

You can confirm if your truck is affected in seconds. Here are the steps:

  1. Locate your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)- It is located on the driver’s side dashboard or in your registration documents.
  2. Visit NHTSA’s recall lookup page or Ford’s recall site.
  3. Enter your VIN to see if recall 25S82 applies to your truck.

You can also call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Here’s Why This Recall Can’t Be Delayed

Although only a small portion of trucks have been recalled, the potential consequences are too serious to ignore. All affected owners should act fast and take their cars for free inspection and repair.
