Dangerous Surf and Coastal Flooding Possible — Erin’s Track Moves Between the Coast and Bermuda

National Guard Deployment Map Released — These States Are Sending Troops to D.C. as Questions Mount

The Atlantic can expect more of hurricane Erin as it moves through! Erin’s movement is being watched closely by forecasters as it makes its way between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda. Hurricane Erin has now been downgraded to a Category 2 as it has lost some of its strength.

It is unlikely that that the storm touchdown on land. However the strong winds and high waves as well as flooding is something to worry about, especially in coastal areas.

The Current Pathway of Erin

Data shows that Erin is moving towards a northeasterly direction. It’s moving between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda. Even though Erin is not making its way directly to land, but the impact will still reach those who live near or along the shore.

Dangerous Surf Conditions

Surfers and beach lovers are in for some unfortunate news. It is important to note that surfers must not take a chance and attempt to go surfing, it is extremely dangerous! Beach waves are expected to reach approximately 3.658 meters. This means that it is not suitable for swimmers or surfers. The other cause for concern is rip currents.

Coastal Flooding and Erosion Risks

With much sadness, swimmers and surfers are not the only ones in the firing line. Flooding along the coast is a risk as well. Erin pushed water level during high tides, and those areas with poor drainage system are very high risk. Locals who live near the coast may also experience flooding.

The other issue that might be a problem is erosion on beaches. The heavy waves at the beaches can wash away sand banks and these sand banks form a protection barrier during the storms. In certain areas, this erosion can make infrastructure weaker.

Bermuda Prepares for Impact

Officials in Bermuda are also watching Erin’s path quite closely. Unfortunately, the Bermuda island is situated closed to the storms proximity and this means that the island can expect strong winds and heavy rains. There have been warnings issued to residents in Bermuda.

The effects of Erin on the island ranges from electricity outages to flooding and this may affect residents detrimentally. Small islands are vulnerable to tropical storms as this can cause significant damage.

Travel and Shipping Disruptions

Apart from all of the risks mentioned above, sea operations are also being impacted by the heavy winds and strong waves that was brought by Erin. In order to avoid the storm, many ships and cargo vessels were changing their routes. Many airlines are also keeping an eye on the situation and passengers are urged to check with the relevant airlines for updates.

The Bigger Climate Picture

In the Atlantic, storms like this are becoming more common and this is something to be concerned. Climate change needs to be researched more in detail, and interventions need to be provided accordingly.

What Can You Do To Stay Safe?

  • Do not swim or surf in dangerous weather conditions.
  • Stay far away from beaches where waves are high.
  • Keep updated with weather information and follow instructions from local authorities.
  • Be prepared for possible flooding and take care of your belongings.

Conclusion: Staying Alert

Erin’s impacts include rip currents and dangerous surf conditions which is extremely dangerous for swimmers. Flooding is also a possibility, and this can result in damage to property and valuables. All of these dangers can also lead to loss of lives.

People who live on the East Coast and in Bermuda should closely monitor weather reports and follow instructions from local authorities. Keep your eyes open and remain safe!
