Each month, the Social Security Administration sends out benefit checks to close to 74 million Americans. Though first introduced as a means of fighting elder poverty, the Social Security program has since grown into a corner stone of financial security for an array of vulnerable individuals such as, retirees, disabled individuals, or survivors.
The Social Security Administration prepares and uploads its benefit payment schedule for the full calendar year to its website, thereby allowing beneficiaries to be fully informed regarding the dates on which they will receive their monthly benefit check. The agency’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments contains the payment dates for both the regular Social Security benefit , as well as the Supplemental Security Income benefit.
A quick glance at the payment schedule for the upcoming month of September may reveal a missing Supplemental Security Income payment, however, this is not an error. Here is what you need to know.
Supplemental Security Income benefit payment for September
The Supplemental Security Income is a type of benefit paid by the Social Security Administration to individuals who are either disabled, aged 65 or older, or blind, who have little to no other resources and income. “SSI is generally for individuals who don’t earn more than $2,019 from work each month. The income limit increases for couples and when parents apply for children. We also look at other sources of income besides your job, like disability benefits, unemployment, and pensions,” according to the SSA.
As such, the SSI benefit payments are usually rolled out to qualifying individuals on the first of each month, however, the payment date can sometimes fluctuate slightly. This often occurs if the first of the months falls on a non-working day such as on a weekend or a holiday. Rather than delaying the payment until later in the new month, the SSA will usually pay the benefit at the end of the previous month so that the beneficiary can access their monthly income as the new month begins.
This is the case for the upcoming month of September as well. On the agency’s schedule, there is no SSI payment scheduled for the entire month of September, however, there are two SSI payments scheduled in August — one on the first of August which is the SSI for August, and then a second SSI payment on August 29th which is the SSI for the month of September.
The remaining dates for Supplemental Security Income benefit payments for the 2025 period are listed below:
- August 1st – SSI benefit for August
- August 29th – SSI benefit for September
- October 1st – SSI benefit for October
- October 31st – SSI benefit for November
- December 1st – SSI benefit for December
- December 31st – SSI benefit for January 2026

The regular Social Security benefits are paid out on Wednesdays through out the month depending on the date of birth of the recipients. The SSA sends out benefit payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of the month in particular.
