As the second Wednesday of the new month approaches, so too does the first round of Social Security benefit payments. On Wednesday, September 10th, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be rolling out benefit checks to all beneficiaries with a birth date between the first and the tenth of their respective birth month. This will also be the first benefit payment that is sent out for the month of September. This is because the September SSI, or Supplemental Security Income benefit (which is generally paid out on the first of each month) had been paid a few days earlier, on August 29th.
As such, here is a complete breakdown of payment dates for both the regular Social Security benefits, as well as the Supplemental Security Income benefits for this September, as per the SSA’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for 2025.
Social Security payment schedule for September
The SSA uploads a payment schedule for the full calendar year to the agency website thereby allowing beneficiaries to plan their monthly budgets around their benefit payment date. On the official Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments, the beneficiary will find payments dates for both the regular Social Security benefit, as well as the Supplemental Security benefit.
With the regular Social Security benefit, which is the benefits paid to recipients such as retirees, disabled individuals, or survivors, the agency has spread out its monthly payment schedule into three distinct Wednesdays throughout the month. In particular, it is the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month. The week during which a beneficiary will be paid is determined in relation to their date of birth.
For the current month of September, the first batch of Social Security benefits will be sent out during this week on Wednesday which is September 10th. This payment will be sent out to recipients who are born between the 1st and the 10th of the month. The complete payment schedule for September Social Security benefits is listed below:
- Second Wednesday, September 10th – recipients with birth dates from the 1st of the month to the 10th
- Third Wednesday, September 17th – recipients with birth dates from the 11th of the month to the 20th
- Fourth Wednesday, September 24th – recipients with birth dates from the 21st of the month to the 31st
Supplemental Security Income
The SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, is a type of benefit that is paid to qualifying individuals who have little to no other resources or income. According to the SSA, “SSI is generally for individuals who don’t earn more than $2,019 from work each month.”
In certain cases, an individual may even qualify to receive the SSI benefit in addition to the regular Social Security benefit. If a beneficiary is receiving both types of benefits, the dates on which they receive payment varies slightly as per the schedule. The SSA states on its payment schedule that “if you received Social Security before May 1997 or if receiving both Social Security & SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.”
Generally speaking, SSI payments are sent out on the first of the month. Sometimes, however, the SSI payment date may fluctuate by a few days and roll out earlier for whatever reason deemed necessary by the SSA, and this was the case with the September SSI as well. As per the schedule, there is no SSI payment for the full month of September. This is because the September SSI was sent out a few days earlier, on August 29th.
Listed below are the remaining SSI payment dates for 2025:
- August 1st – SSI benefit for August
- August 29th – SSI benefit for September
- October 1st – SSI benefit for October
