The government has issued an urgent warning for 90,000 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru cars. These cars have a serious defect that could increase the risk of a crash. The problem is caused by a faulty heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that causes defrosters and defoggers to stop working. Drivers who heavily rely on clear windshields in bad weather are the most affected by this defect.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the recall notice on September 5. In the notice, NHTSA also warned owners to act fast to avoid safety risks.

Which Models Are Affected

The cars affected are from the 2023 through 2025 model years, according to the NHTSA. The following are the models that have been recalled:

  • Toyota bZ4X (2023-2025)
  • Lexus RZ (2023-2025)
  • Subaru Solterra (2023-2025)

These models are fully electric SUVs developed as part of Toyota’s corporate umbrella, which owns Lexus and has a stake in Subaru.

What the Defect Means for Drivers

The recall emanates from a defect in the electrical compressor in the HVAC system. According to experts, the part may fail, causing the defroster or defogger to stop working properly. This leads to reduced visibility, which increases the chances of a crash. While all vehicles are affected differently, the risk involved is serious enough that all affected owners are urged to act immediately.

How the Recall Fix Will Work

The NHTSA has revealed that the remedy entails a software update to the HVAC control system. Besides the software update, dealers will inspect the electrical compressor and replace it if it‘s damaged. All these services will be provided for free. Owners will receive notification letters by October 20, 2025.

To make the recall process easier, owners are advised to always reference the following recall codes to make it easy for customer service to help you:

  • Toyota bZ4X: 25TB07 and 25TA07
  • Lexus RZ: 25LB04 and 25LA04
  • Subaru Solterra: WRD-25

They can reach Toyota customer service at t 1-800-331-4331. For Subaru and Lexus, owners of the affected models should reach out to their respective service lines or dealerships.

What to Do if You Own One of These Vehicles

If your vehicle is part of the recall, you should take the following steps:

  1. Confirm if your car is affected by checking the NHTSA recall databases using your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or license plate at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. Wait for the official notification letter that will be sent by late October.
  3. Contact your nearest Toyota, Subaru, or Lexus dealership and schedule an appointment.
  4. Act fast even if you have not experienced the defects.

How Serious is the Problem?

While only a small number of vehicles are affected compared to other major recall campaigns, a malfunctioning defroster or defogger could pose an immediate hazard in poor weather when it’s needed most.

According to automotive experts, software-driven systems in EVs are becoming increasingly complex. Recalls like this one indicate that the affected components play a major role in everyday safety.

Other Major Auto Recalls

This recall is part of a wave of recent safety actions across the U.S. auto market in 2025. Here are other recalls experienced in 2025:

  • Ford- Recalled over 800,000 vehicles, including SUVs and trucks.
  • GM- Recalled over 23,000 Chevrolet Corvettes.
  • Honda and Acura: Currently being investigated over potential engine failures in 1.4 million cars.
  • Jeep, Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi- They have recalled over 175,000 vehicles altogether.

Conclusion

The Toyota, Subaru, and Lexus recall has a ready solution that entails a software update and inspection of the electric system. It‘s good news for drivers affected that the inspection, software update, and replacement of any parts will be done for free at all dealerships.
