In addition to the regular Social Security benefits that roll out on Wednesdays through the month, the Social Security Administration also pays out an additional benefit at the beginning of each month called the Supplemental Security Income. Under certain circumstances, some beneficiaries may even qualify to receive both the regular Social Security benefit, as well as the Supplemental Security Income benefit.

The payment dates for both types of benefits can be found on the same schedule on the Social Security Administration’s website. The schedule is uploaded in advance and contains payment dates for the full calendar year, making it easy for beneficiaries to view and plan out their monthly budgets.

The regular Social Security benefits are paid out on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month in relation to the date of birth of the recipient. The Supplemental Security Income benefit, on the other hand, is generally paid out on the first of every month. A quick glance at the payment schedule for the upcoming month of September may reveal a missed Supplemental Security Income benefit payment, but this is not the case. Here is what you need to know.

Social Security benefit payment schedule

The SSA’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments has the payment dates for both the regular benefit and the Supplemental Security Income benefits marked on it. Generally speaking, your Supplemental Security Income benefit is paid out on the first of each month, however, this can fluctuate by a few days occasionally. As a result, it can sometimes seem as though a payment is being missed or that there are going to be two SSI benefit payments in one month.

This August, for instance, will be having two Supplemental Security Income payments as marked on the SSA’s schedule. The first SSI payment went out on August 1st as it usually does. However, there will also be a second SSI payment again on August 29th. This is not a bonus payment or an error, but rather, it is the SSI payment to be used for the month of September.

If the SSI payment is not scheduled for the first, it will usually be issued on the last working day of the previous month for whatever reason deemed necessary by the SSA. This usually occurs when the first of the month falls on a holiday or a weekend. As such, in order to prevent any delays with the benefit payment in the new month, the agency issues the SSI benefit a few days earlier instead.

Upcoming payment dates to take note of

The Supplemental Security Income benefit for August will have already reached the bank accounts of beneficiaries as of August 1st. The SSA does, however, note that, “if you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.”

For the remainder of the year, the SSI benefits will be paid out on the following dates:

  • August 1st – SSI for August
  • August 29th – SSI for September
  • October 1st – SSI for October
  • October 31st – SSI for November
  • December 1st – SSI for December
  • December 31st – SSI for January 2026

The regular Social Security benefits for August and September will roll out on the following dates:

August:

  • Second Wednesday, August 13th – recipients with birth dates from the 1st of the month to the 10th
  • Third Wednesday, August 20th – recipients with birth dates from the 11th of the month to the 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday, August 27th – recipients with birth dates from the 21st of the month to the 31st

September:

  • Second Wednesday, September 10th – recipients with birth dates from the 1st of the month to the 10th
  • Third Wednesday, September 17th – recipients with birth dates from the 11th of the month to the 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday, September 24th – recipients with birth dates from the 21st of the month to the 31st

Additionally, “if you received Social Security before May 1997 or if receiving both Social Security & SSI, Social Security is paid on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st,” as per the SSA’s schedule.
