Social Security U-Turn in September — Schumer’s Plan to Rebuild SSA and Speed Up Checks (If Congress Agrees)

The Social Security program was introduced ninety years ago with the goal of preventing senior poverty, and today the Social Security Administration (SSA) pays monthly benefits to around 74 million beneficiaries. Retirees are no longer the only group receiving a monthly income from the program. In addition to retirees, the SSA also pays benefits to survivors and disabled individuals each month.

The agency also administers Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is a separate benefit paid to older adults, people living with disabilities, and in certain cases children, all of whom have little to no other income or resources.

Unlike regular Social Security benefits, which are paid on Wednesdays throughout the month depending on the recipient’s date of birth, SSI is generally paid on the first of each month. The SSI payment date can sometimes shift slightly; if that happens, it will still be clearly listed on the SSA’s official payment schedule, which is available on the agency’s website.

According to the 2025 benefit payment schedule, the month of August will include not one, but two SSI payments. Here is what you need to know.

August payment schedule for Supplemental Security Income

According to the SSA’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for 2025, there will be two SSI payments in August. This is not an error, nor is it a bonus payment. Instead, the September SSI payment is being made a few days early.

The first SSI payment went out on August 1, covering the month of August. At the end of the month, on August 29, a second SSI payment will be issued to qualifying beneficiaries. This second payment represents the benefit for September.

As a result, no SSI payment will be made in September, with the next payment scheduled for October 1. The SSA typically issues SSI payments early if the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, ensuring beneficiaries have access to their funds at the start of the month rather than facing a delay.

Remaining SSI payment dates for 2025

  • August 1 – SSI benefit for August
  • August 29 – SSI benefit for September
  • October 1 – SSI benefit for October
  • October 31 – SSI benefit for November
  • December 1 – SSI benefit for December
  • December 31 – SSI benefit for January 2026

Regular Social Security payment dates

For beneficiaries who also receive regular Social Security retirement or disability benefits, August and September payments will be made on the following dates:

August:

  • Second Wednesday, August 13 – recipients with birth dates from the 1st to the 10th
  • Third Wednesday, August 20 – recipients with birth dates from the 11th to the 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday, August 27 – recipients with birth dates from the 21st to the 31st

September:

  • Second Wednesday, September 10 – recipients with birth dates from the 1st to the 10th
  • Third Wednesday, September 17 – recipients with birth dates from the 11th to the 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday, September 24 – recipients with birth dates from the 21st to the 31st
