Fernando Alonso seems to be the most relaxed of Aston Martin with regard to the start of the season. Although it is true that the start has been well below expectations, especially his own with two retirements, it seems that his 18 seasons in F1 have made him see things from a different perspective and he is asking for patience. “F1 is not like soccer”
Stepping up to the plate for Aston Martin
Proof of Fernando Alonso’s calmness are his constant statements about the improvement of the team. The Spaniard is happy with the work team, with the new facilities, and with Aston Martin’s efforts to have a team that can compete with the best in the coming seasons. He believes that the right thing is being done and that, with time, the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place.
“We need time. This isn’t like soccer. Soccer is very easy. You get the best pitch, the best coach, the best players and, in the end, it’s very possible that you’ll win the next game. In F1 you can have the best facilities and the best professionals and you still need time to mix all the ingredients to win, and we have many examples of this in the history of our sport. I think the team now lacks nothing compared to the best teams in terms of facilities, people, talent, wind tunnel, all these kinds of things, but we still need time to harmonize everything.”
Learning so that everything runs smoothly in 2026
Although Aston Martin can hopefully take small steps during the 2025 World Championship, even fight for a place in the top five and maybe even a podium in a race, the goal is 2026, so this year it’s time to get everything ready, for the team to get used to working together, so that everything goes smoothly for the next campaign, where all the team’s efforts are being put to use.
“I hope 2025 is enough time to learn all the lessons so that we are as ready as possible for 2026. It’s a year in which there is also a change in regulations”.
Despite his optimism, he is aware of the great struggle of all the F1 teams to succeed with the arrival of the new regulations. He knows that everyone is fighting to be at the top but that very few will succeed. So he warns: “There are no guarantees of anything”, all that remains is to work and hope to get it right.
Adrian Newey’s trump card
But if there is something that generates hope for the entire British team and for Fernando Alonso himself, it is the arrival of Adrian Newey. In some places he has been faster and in others it has taken a little longer, but where the engineer has gone, he has won, and it is hoped that with Aston Martin he will be no exception.
“I know Adrian is highly motivated and fully engaged in everything coming up for 2026. He is also following what we are doing every weekend. I know his way of thinking well. So I know what he is capable of, and I am excited about what may happen in the future.”
Spanish motorsport wants to see Fernando Alonso fighting for the top. Time is running out for us to enjoy a third world championship for the Asturian driver, but it is Fernando himself who is asking for patience, so there is nothing left to do but wait and trust that the investment from Aston Martin and the arrival of Adrian Newey will enable the creation of a winning car that can return the Asturian to the top of F1.
