Luka Modric is in his thirteenth season at Real Madrid and it might not be his last. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the first captain of the white team wants to continue his stay at the Santiago Bernabéu and sign a contract extension for at least another year. He has earned his place on the pitch, especially in recent weeks.
Modric turned the Euroderby around at the Santiago Bernabéu. Without him, the image of Real Madrid was not the best. At various points in the game, Atlético de Madrid took control and Ancelotti’s team pressed in a disorganised way. With the Croatian’s introduction, things changed and the Whites were able to secure a win that gave them a certain advantage.
Days later, the Croatian was also key against Rayo Vallecano. Luka Modric, together with Vinicius, was the man of the match. He once again gave a recital in the middle of the pitch, making the best decision at all times, combining fast play with pauses when the play called for it, moving the ball short and long. One of the Croatian’s best performances so far this season and showing that the rotation he has had during the year allows him to face this part of the season in a state of form unthinkable for a player who turns 40 in a few months.
Against Girona, on February 23rd, a goal from Luka was what unblocked a match that Madrid ended up winning (2-0). Ancelotti did not hesitate to praise his player: “Modric is a gift to football and he can continue playing for as long as he wants. He does what he does very well. Real Madrid has been lucky to have a legend who has defined an era and football has been lucky to have him because of his reliability, quality and professionalism”.
Modric is still a fundamental piece in Carlo Ancelotti’s team and has adapted perfectly to his new role. Luka no longer plays every game as a starter, but he is always there when he is needed and his level is still spectacular.
In La Liga alone, he has played a total of 1256 minutes with Real Madrid. This is very close to the 1810 minutes played by Jude Bellingham, a much younger player who has also established himself in the team. In total, he has played for 2087 minutes this season, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. Modric has already made 51 appearances for Madrid this season and has only missed three games.
