Sergio Pérez will return to the Formula 1 paddock in Miami. Not as an official driver, but almost. Sergio Pérez has been a free agent since the end of last season when he reached an agreement with the Red Bull team to terminate his contract with the team.

However, this agreement still allowed him to compete as Max Verstappen’s teammate in the 2025 season.

Sergio Pérez aims to lead Cadillac’s F1 project in 2026

Despite still having a contractual relationship with the energy drink team, the Mexican failed to meet the team’s expectations in 2024 after several positive seasons with them. That was when the Red Bull team decided to part ways with the Mexican and compensate him financially to release him from his contract.

After leaving Red Bull, Pérez opted to take a break from his career and spend time with his family during the first “six months” of 2025. Even so, his name is already being mentioned as a strong candidate to join projects such as Cadillac’s.

In fact, everything points to the Mexican being a very attractive driver for the 2026 season, especially given his proven potential, his experience in Formula 1 and in a top-level team like Red Bull, as well as his long career as a Formula 1 driver.

Cadillac will be officially unveiled at the Miami Grand Prix… With Sergio Pérez?

A career that could be extended if he finally reaches an agreement with Cadillac to be their driver for the 2026 season. Rumors have been circulating for months that the Mexican is a clear candidate to drive for the team.

He would join others such as Colin Herta, and although it is known that there has not yet been any official approach, what has become known is that it does seem likely to happen this weekend at the Miami Grand Prix.

As such, rumors have been circulating for some time, but in recent days they have intensified. ‘Checo’ is said to be very close to signing his contract with Cadillac to return to the top flight after missing out in 2025.

The American brand is very keen on the option of Pérez, who would bring experience and a big impact on the North American market.

“Between May and June, Cadillac should be putting together a team with a couple of drivers”

“We have to wait for news because there is already a lot of talk, insistently, that Cadillac could announce something important with Sergio Pérez in the coming weeks. Approximately between May and June, they should be putting together a team with a couple of drivers, it won’t be long now,” said journalist Chacho López on Fox Sports.

In Miami, it has also been confirmed that Cadillac will make its official Formula 1 debut this Saturday, May 3, where General Motors executives will be in the paddock all weekend. It will be a very special event for them, less than nine months before their official debut.

Time will tell if this new chapter becomes a reality. For now, what is certain is that both Checo Pérez and Cadillac share a vision: to build something meaningful from scratch.

For the Guadalajara-born driver, it could represent not only a new beginning in Formula 1, but also the chance to lead a project with his own stamp, far from the shadows and tensions of his previous stage.

In a sport where talent and strategy go hand in hand, the likely union between Pérez and Cadillac could become one of the most interesting stories of 2026. F1 is changing, and perhaps Sergio Pérez is about to reinvent himself once again.
