Adrian Newey, recognized as one of the best minds in Formula 1 of all time, begins his official collaboration with Aston Martin. A move that begins a process to place the British team among the best teams in the competition, together with the experience and knowledge of an engineer who has been key in several world championships in the competition.

Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin

The arrival of Adrian Newey at Aston Martin was an important step in the team’s strategy to reach the top of Formula 1. In fact, Lawrence Stroll had invested a very significant amount of money in the team and to keep Fernando Alonso, with Newey being the figurehead of the aforementioned development project. The British engineer has taken on the role of ‘technical managing partner‘, which means he has a 2.5% share in the team.

The contract between Newey and Aston Martin includes a salary of over 20 million pounds a year, with the potential to reach 30 million if Newey meets certain objectives. This figure demonstrates the team’s faith and confidence in how he can help Aston Martin improve performance on the track to achieve success and become the best team in Formula 1.

Adrian Newey’s career

Adrian Newey was born on December 26, 1958 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. At 67, he has more than four decades of experience. Newey has been key in achieving 12 constructors’ titles and has contributed to more than 200 Grand Prix victories. His time with teams such as Williams, McLaren and Red Bull has left its mark on the competition. At Red Bull, his designs have led the team to dominate Formula 1, winning titles continuously between 2010 and 2013 and also in 2021 and 2022.

Newey’s role at Aston Martin

Adrian Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin, as well as bringing a wealth of experience, also brings a design philosophy that mixes traditional methods with current technology. Renowned for his predilection for hand-drawn designs, Newey will continue to make the most of his drawing board of developments in the Silverstone workshops.

Aston Martin finished last season in fifth position in the constructors’ championship. Internal changes have taken place in the team to enable it to continue growing, but it still has significant problems to face. Newey’s experience is relevant in the search to address current problems as well as increasing the performance of the car in the coming seasons.

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin’s main driver, has expressed his interest in joining forces with Newey, the two of them could be the spark that pushes the team to the next level in competitions. Both the Asturian driver and the designer have repeatedly expressed their intention to work together, the thorn in both their sides for not having done so, but fate has meant that they have one last chance to do so before their respective retirements, which do not seem to be far away.

The arrival of Adrian Newey at Aston Martin marks the start of a new era for the British team, which under his direction and with his ideas, hopes to become a top-level competitor in Formula 1. Newey is already working officially with the team, but his real impact and work is expected to be seen from next season, when the new regulations come into force, but he is expected to modify the AMR25 this year.
